One Great Day in

Ravello

THE TOWN

The Amalfi Coast is revered for its incredible views and amazing lifestyle.  Ravello is a hilltop town less sought after by the tourists in Positano and Amalfi and its quaint beauty is well worth the trip.

First stop is the Duomo di Ravello, the centerpiece of this hilltop town with a welcoming piazza lined with shops and cafes.  After the ride up the hill, stop and have a espresso and a cornetto before starting the walk to the Villa Cimbrone.

Pro Tip:  From the Ferry dock in Amalfi, you can take a SITA bus to Ravello.  It’s a curvy, uphill drive that takes about 30 minutes.  It costs 1.50€ for the one way trip.  There is not always seats on the bus, and you can just check with the driver if the next bus stops in Ravello.  “Scusa, il prossimo autobus si ferma a ravello?”  The bus drops you right out down the street from the Piazza al Duomo di Ravello. You walk up the hill and through the car tunnel to get to the main square. You can purchase your bus tickets at any tabacchi (tabacco store).

CHECK IT OUT

Villa Cimbrone Gardens

Complete with an “infinity terrace” (aka terrazzo infinito), this beautiful resort hotel was first mentioned in the 11th century as an estate belonging to a noble family from Ravello.  Now, this property is a upscale hotel with a Michelin starred restaurant.  The Gardens are magnificent any time of the year, but the real reason to visit is the view.  Atop a rocky promontory among lilacs, roses and flowers everywhere, you will be able to look out on the breathtaking view of the Amalfitano Coast.  If you don’t like heights, maybe don’t look down from the terrazzo infinito! The horizon and mountains of southern Campania are in view, across the glistening Tyrrhenian Sea.

Pro Tip: The walk to Villa Cimbrone is about 15 minutes but it is steep and has some stairs.  Take your time going there, it’s worth the effort for sure!  Tickets are €10 and the ticket office does accept credit cards.

IL DOLCE

Pasticceria Sal De Riso

The bakery is famously known for its Limone Delizia, a dome shaped lemon cake with whipped cream and lemony lusciousness. The shop is in the piazza by the Ferry dock in a small town called Minori.

You can walk, from the Piazza in Ravello, down many, many stairs to Minori. It’s a beautiful walk (with many many stairs) and well worth the time to do it.  It took us 90 minutes to walk, basically all down steps, many with railings and our legs were tired when we arrived in Minori. Stop along the way and enjoy the beautiful view knowing that a Spritz and some delicious dolci are waiting for you when you get there. You can take the ferry from Minori to Amalfi, then change to connect to other cities on the coast. If you are making a whole day of your trip to Ravello, we highly recommend this downhill view of the coast.
